hokie nation

i went to a virginia tech football game with my whole family on saturday. my dad, brother, cousins, aunts, and uncle all went there, so they're all part of the hokie nation. here's an old photo (minus me) of the usual tailgating set (note: we're all short). anyway, this event made me realize how different my college experience was from a lot of people's.

it was an orange effect game, so everyone in the stands was wearing orange (except for the handful of georgia tech fans, of course). there are packs of students playing beer pong on the side of the road and people walking around with cases of bud lite, drinking 40s out of paper bags. shirtless men are riding around in the backs of pick-up trucks drunkenly yelling "GO TECH GO" or "LET'S GO" which has an anticipated response of "HOKIEEEESSSSS." at the game itself, everyone is constantly standing and high-fiving all the strangers sitting around them. before the team runs out on the field, they play "enter sandman" and everyone in the stands jumps up and down for the duration of the song (the stadium holds like 75,000 people). but my favorite image of the day was: a man a few rows in front of us brandishing an enormous turkey leg (which they sell at the games). he would take a bite out of it very dramatically and then shake it in the air with enthusiasm which sent turkey flying at everyone sitting around him. and they all thought it was awesome.

in conclusion, thank you, william and mary football team, for never being very good.

also, going home was nice. i got to meet matthew and sarah's new cross-eyed cat and got to have breakfast at an old people restaurant i like.

(p.s. g went with me to see the silver jews last week, and dcist has some pictures of how crazy/awesome david berman is. his grandmother introduced the band. great!)

this is how i feel about haley's high school experience! she's always dressing up for pep rallies and wearing fake tattoos on her face of our mascot/high school. silly haley! although she is in the gay-straight alliance, which shows: 1) i left a small legacy; 2) she is great.
