two great things about 15th and D

1. the ice cream truck (van). it's actually a white van (similar to this) with a good humour sign in the window. interestingly, it only really comes around at night. aren't the young children in the neighborhood asleep by then? it drives around for hours, multiple nights a week, or more commonly parks on the corner and blares that ice cream truck music. i'm pretty sure that the only ice cream they might sell is for the munchies people get after they buy the weed the driver is inevitably dealing. in the world of gsa proposal writing, we would call that a "total solution."

2. the boys on the corner. there are a group of young men, mostly high school aged, who loiter on the corner and ride their bikes in circles in the intersection. they hang out outside the d&r family market, an establishment that seems to only sell mouthwash and some candy that may or may not be located in a glass case behind the counter. they never go in the store (no one does). they just sit on crates outside or lean against the building. i didn't know what to think of them when we first moved in, but now i think they're kind of hilarious and i look forward to seeing what they're up to everyday on my walk back from the metro. but i worry: will they have to take their loitering to warmer indoor locations as fall and winter approach? will they be like the flowers and suddenly begin blooming out of the cracks in the sidewalk in the spring? or maybe they'll just put on really warm coats.

you should have a block party, and invite the street kids!
